Dear Mr. President,

Hi!

I am Sung-Yun Hwang.

I am the president of the Children's Club in Korea's Global International School.

I write to you to ask you a favor.

I am a Korean who was born in Korea, but people do not seem to know me.

I was born in Korea.

I only know how to speak Korean.

I only eat Korean food.

My father is also Korean.

So it must be definite that I am a Korean, right?

But people do not seem to accept this.

I think it's because I am colored.

I guess it must be obvious, then.

My mother is from Ghana, in Africa.

She has dark skin.

That is why I was born with dark skin and curly hair as well.

So I had a lot of difficulties up until now.

I asked myself "why is my skin color different?"

I was teased a lot in school because of my color.

I even learned Tae-Kwon-Do to punish those who called me a black African.

I have a hard time when those kids bully me and play on their own.

So that's why I do not want to go to a place where there are many people.

But my mother died three years ago.

My father soon followed her last autumn.

I hated my parents for leaving us all alone.

I am still hurt.

I miss both my mom and dad.

My two other siblings and I fought and cried many times.

Then we prayed to Jesus.

Jesus listened to our prayers.

He allowed us to meet a great pastor.

We built a house where we stay together and even a pretty teacher came here.

Now, I started studying at the Global International School.

GIS is a school that teaches children like us who are born within a multicultural family.

I am now in Grade 4 with kids from diverse backgrounds.

I am studying and playing with friends from Thailand, Philippines, China, Myanmar, Mongol, America, Ghana, India, and soon who all have different skin colors.

I participated in the presidential elections in our Children's Club last year in May.

Then, I had the chance to give out the last speech during the election.

I asked my friends,

"Do you know who the President of the United States is?"

The children answered in one voice,

"Barack Obama!"

I continued on my speech,

"But why does President Obama have black skin?

It's because his father is from Kenya.

I also have black skin.

That's because my mother is from Ghana in Africa.

I will become like President Obama when I grow up.

Please vote for me to become the president of the Children's Club!"

Guess what happened as a result?

I obviously became the president of the Children's Club and now I am writing to you.

But my school has another name apart from the Global International School.

That is, the Obama School.

'How can a school in Korea be named after the President of the United States?'

You must be surprised.

Our school is mostly composed of children from multicultural families like me.

There are also Korean children who were born in foreign countries.

We are hurt when we are teased by other children who bully us for being different, but we want to be like you when we grow up.

That is why our school was named Obama School and it is still called so.

If you search us on the Internet by this name, our school homepage will pop up.

So this means our school's name is Obama School, right?

I want to grow up to become like you, who does important jobs.

I want to become a diplomat who contributes to world unity.

That's why I'm learning Korean, English, and other languages of my parents.

Our school's distinctive feature is that it helps us become experts at multilingualism.

I promise to study in this Global International School and later achieve my goal!

Mr. President!

Would you like to visit our school once?

Our students who are from multinational families have decided to invite you after a discussion.

We really want to greet you and show you who we are.

It's impossible for all of us to go to the U.S.

So you should come visit our school when you visit Korea.

Please make our wish come true.

I will be counting the days until you come visit us.

Mr. President!

버락 오바마 대통령님!

안녕하세요?

저는 황성연이예요.

대한민국 지구촌국제학교 어린이회 회장입니다.

소원이 하나 있어 이 편지를 드립니다.

저는 대한민국에서 태어난 한국사람이예요.

그런데 사람들은 제가 그렇게 보이지 않나봐요.

저는 한국에서 태어났어요.

한국말만 할 줄 알고요.

음식도 한국 음식만 먹고 있어요.

아빠도 한국사람이고요.

그러면 저는 한국사람이 분명하죠?

그런데 사람들은 저를 한국 사람으로 인정하지 않는 것 같아요.

아마 저의 피부색이 검기 때문인가 봐요.

어쩌면 당연한 일이죠?

저의 엄마는 아프리카 가나에서 오셨어요.

엄마는 피부색이 검으세요.

그래서 저도 곱슬머리에 피부색이 검게 태어났지요.

그래서 저는 지금까지 불만이 참 많았어요.

나는 왜 피부색이 다른 사람들과 다를까 하구요.

피부색이 달라서 친구들의 놀림을 많이 받았어요.

아프리카 흑인이라고 놀리는 아이를 때려주려고 태권도를 배우기도 했어요.

자기들끼리 놀면서 왕따를 시킬 땐 정말 힘이 들었어요.

그래서 많은 사람들이 있는 자리에는 가고 싶지 않아요.

그런데 저를 낳아 주신 엄마가 3년 전에 돌아가셨어요.

뒤따라 아빠도 작년 가을 돌아가셨고요.

우리를 두고 떠난 엄마와 아빠가 원망스러웠어요.

지금도 마음이 많이 아파요.

엄마 아빠도 많이 보고 싶어요.

우리 삼남매는 서로 화도 내고, 많이 울기도 했어요.

그러다가 우리는 예수님께 기도를 했어요.

예수님께서 저의 기도를 들어 주셨어요.

예수님께서 멋진 목사님을 만나게 해 주셨어요.

함께 사는 집도 만들고, 예쁜 선생님도 오셨어요.

지금은 지구촌국제학교에서 새롭게 공부를 시작했어요.

지구촌국제학교는 저희 삼남매와 같은 다문화 친구들을 위해 올 해 초에 문을 연 초등학교예요.

저는 지금 다양한 국적의 친구들과 함께 초등학교 4학년에 다니고 있어요.

필리핀, 태국, 미얀마, 중국, 몽골, 미국, 가나, 인디아 등 피부색도 다르고 언어도 다른 친구들이 함께 뛰어놀며 공부하고 있어요.

지난 5월 제가 어린이회 회장에 출마를 했어요.

그리고 선거하는 날에 마지막 연설을 하게 되었죠.

그 때 저는 친구들에게 큰 소리로 물었습니다.

"여러분은 미국대통령이 누구인줄 아십니까?"

아이들이 한 목소리로 대답을 했어요.

"버락 오바마"

저는 연설을 이어 갔어요.

"그런데 버락 오바마 대통령은 왜 검은 피부를 가졌을까요?"

"아버지가 아프리카 케냐 출신이기 때문이지요!"

"저도 검은 피부색을 가지고 있어요"

"그것은 저의 엄마가 아프리카 가나에서 오셨기 때문입니다."

"저도 커서 버락 오바마 대통령 같은 인물이 되겠습니다!"

"저를 지구촌국제학교 어린이회 회장으로 뽑아 주시기 바랍니다!"

결과는 어떻게 되었을까요?

당연히 제가 어린이회 회장에 뽑혔고 지금 이렇게 이 글을 쓰게 되었어요.

그런데 저희학교는 '지구촌국제학교'말고도 또 다른 이름이 하나 더 있어요.

그 이름은 '오바마 스쿨'이예요.

' 어떻게 한국에 미국대통령의 이름이 들어간 학교가 있을까?'아마 깜짝 놀라셨을 거예요.

우리 학교에는 저를 비롯하여 대부분의 아이들이 국제결혼 다문화 가정의 자녀들입니다.

또 외국에서 태어나 한국에 온 아이들도 있어요.

피부색이 다르다고 놀림을 받고 마음이 아플 때도 많지만 저희들도 커서 대통령님 같은 사람이 되고 싶거든요. 그래서 우리학교 이름을 오바마스쿨이라고 지었고, 그렇게 부르고 있답니다.

저도 커서 버락 오바마 대통령님처럼 큰일을 하는 사람이 되고 싶어요.

세계가 하나 될 수 있게 이바지하는 외교관이 제 꿈입니다.

그래서 한국어와 영어, 그리고 저희 부모님 나라의 언어까지 배우고 있어요.

우리들이 가진 장점을 살려 다중언어 전문가가 되는 것이 우리학교의 특징이예요.

저는 한국에 있는 이 지구촌국제학교에서 공부하며 반드시 제 꿈을 이루어 나갈 것을 약속합니다.



버락 오바마 대통령님!

저희 오바마스쿨에 한번 오시지 않으시겠어요?

우리 다문화가정 자녀들인 우리들은 회의를 열어 대통령님을 초청하기로 했습니다.

우리는 다문화가정 자녀들로서 꼭 만나서 인사를 드리고 싶어요.

우리가 미국에 가서 인사를 드리는 것은 불가능하잖아요.

그러기에 대통령님께서 한국에 오실 때 꼭 저희 학교를 방문해 주세요.

저희들의 소원을 들어 주세요.

저도 대통령님 만나는 날을 손꼽아 기다리겠습니다.

버락 오바마 대통령님!

힘을 내세요.
