마크 에스퍼 신임 미 국방장관이 23일 발생한 중국과 러시아의 한국방공식별구역(KADIZ) 및 독도 영공 침범 논란과 관련해 러시아의 침범을 ‘한국영공 침범’으로 규정했다.
24일(현지시간) 미 국방부 홈페이지에 따르면 에스퍼 장관은 이날 기자들의 질의에 이같이 언급했다. 당시 질의한 현지 기자는 독도를 ‘일본해에 있는 섬(the island in-in the Sea of Japan)’이라고 표현했다.
하지만 에스퍼 장관은 해당 질문에 “러시아가 남쪽 노선, 그 지역을 비행해온 건 새로운 일이 아니다. 내 생각에 러시아가 ‘한국 영공(South Korean airspace)’을 가로질렀다는 게 새로운 사실”이라고 답했다.
그는 이어 “최근 3시간 동안 이 사건에 대해 세부적으로 연구하지 않았다”면서도 “한국은 명확하게 대응했다”고 강조했다.
그는 추후 한국과 일본 방문 일정을 거론하며 “내가 태평양 지역을 찾아 그들과 만나면 이 문제를 논의하고 싶다”고 했다.
한국군은 지난 23일 중국과 러시아가 KADIZ에 무단 진입한 데 이어 러시아 군용기가 독도 영공을 침범하자 F-16 전투기로 360발에 달하는 경고사격을 가했다. 독도 영유권을 주장하는 일본은 한국군이 자기 영토에서 사격을 했다고 주장하며 대응을 비난했다.
미 상원의원들은 러시아와 중국의 군용기가 한국방공식별구역(KADIZ)에 무단 진입한 것을 “미 동맹국들의 균열을 노린 도발”이라고 비난했다고 ‘미국의소리’ 방송이 보도했다.
린지 그레이엄 공화당 의원은 “이것은 도발”이라며 “이번 사건은 널리 규탄돼야 하며, 중국과 러시아라는 두 폭력배 정권에 맞서야 한다”고 말했다. 댄 설리번 민주당 의원은 “중국과 러시아는 수십년간 한국, 일본, 북대서양조약기구(NATO) 동맹들을 미국과 균열시키려는 노력을 해왔다”며 한-미-일 삼각 공조는 필수라고 말했다.
