마크 저커버그 페이스북 최고경영자(CEO)는 5일(현지시간) 자신의 페이스북 계정에 “AI를 활용해 페이스북에 올라온 사진을 시각장애인도 경험할 수 있도록 돕는 기술을 선보인다”고 밝혔다.
지금까지 시각장애인들은 인터넷에 올라온 글을 음성으로 변환해주는 TTS(text to speech) 기술을 통해 정보를 습득할 수 있었다. 하지만 사진처럼 시각적인 정보에 대해서는 접근할 수 있는 방법이 없었다.

But until now, screen readers haven't been able to describe what's in a photo. Using artificial intelligence, we're able to understand what's in a photo and describe that for someone using words. This is a great use of AI technology, and it's an important step towards making sure everyone has equal access to information and is included in the conversation. 페이스북은 AI를 활용해 사진을 분석하고 몇 가지 단어로 설명해 시각장애인이 사진에 대한 정보를 얻을 수 있도록 한다. 예를 들어 소나무 숲이 우거진 사진이 뜨면 ‘나무, 하늘, 야외활동’ 등으로 설명한다. 남녀 커플이 선글라스를 끼고 해변 앞에서 다정하게 찍은 사진은 ‘두 사람, 선글라스, 웃음, 하늘, 야외활동, 물’ 등으로 표현한다.
저커버그는 “이 기술은 모든 이가 정보에 동등하게 접근하고 대화를 하도록 만드는데 중요한 이정표가 될 것”이라고 설명했다.
