'하나님의교회' 미국서도 종말론 내세워 물의…피플지 보도

한국의 한 종교단체가 미국에서 나라망신을 시키고 있다.

미국 피플지에 따르면 ‘하나님의교회 세계복음선교협회(구 안상홍증인회)’는 미국에서 시한부종말론 재산헌납 이혼 아동학대 등으로 문제를 일으키고 있고 보도했다. 피플지는 타임지 계열의 유력 매체다.

피플지는 지난달 12일자 온라인 신문에서 하나님의교회 신도였던 미셸 콜론씨와 탈퇴자 6명의 인터뷰를 통해 하나님의교회가 사람들의 약점을 이용해 신도로 만들고, 통제와 세뇌를 통해 ‘어머니 하나님’과 교회에 빠지게 한다고 소개했다. 그리고 신도들이 시간과 재산을 교회에 바치게 해 이혼 재산헌납 등의 문제가 나타나고 있다고 지적했다.

미국의 사이비종교집단 연구가인 릭 로스는 “그들은 어떠한 방해요소도 원하지 않는다. 그래서 누구와 결혼할지, 누구와 데이트할지, 자녀들을 가질지, 그 무엇이든지 이 집단이 허락해야 한다”면서 “그들은 (포교에서) 최대한 생산적이기를 원하기 때문에 궁극적으로 어린이는 반생산적”이라고 설명했다. 로스는 “이 사이비종교집단은 다른 어떤 삶도 갖지 못하게 하는 방식으로 개개인의 삶을 점령한다”고 주장했다.

이 종교집단의 교주는 1985년 국수를 먹다가 뇌출혈로 사망한 안상홍씨와 장길자(73·여)씨다. 하나님의교회 신도들은 안씨를 ‘아버지 하나님’으로, 장씨를 ‘어머니 하나님’으로 떠받들고 있다. 장씨는 국제위러브유운동본부의 명예 회장을 맡고 있는데, 최근 이 단체의 행사에 국민배우 이순재씨가 참석한 바 있다.

미셸 콜론씨는 세상의 종말이 가까우며 한국에서 온 나이 많은 이 여성이 하나님이라 2년 동안 굳게 믿었다. 간호사인 콜론씨는 2년 동안 뉴저지 교외 릿지우드에 있는 하나님의교회 세계복음선교협회에 다녔다. 피플지와 나눈 대화에서 콜론씨는 하나님의교회를 4년 전에 떠났다고 말했다. 이유는 자신이 종말론 사이비종교에 세뇌되었다고 믿기 때문이라고 했다.

콜론씨는 50년 된 이 하나님의교회에 대해 민사소송을 제기했다. 피플지가 그 소송 내용을 입수했다. 콜론씨의 주장대로라면 “이 집단이 벌이는 범죄, 불법 행위를 신도들이 폭로하지 않도록 여러 가지 심리적인 통제전략을 사용하며” “수익을 내는” 사이비종교, 즉 cult다.

교회는 응소를 통해 콜론씨의 주장하는 혐의는 “완전히 조작되었다”고 했다. 답변서에는 콜론씨가 고소를 통해 “자신을 ‘이단과의 전쟁’ 참전자로 만들고 나아가 하나님의교회의 명성에 손상을 입혀 이단전문가로 경력을 쌓으려” 한다고 써있다.

그러나 과거에 12년 동안 신도였던 사람을 포함하여 탈퇴자 6명과 나눈 인터뷰 내용은 콜론의 주장과 같다. 탈퇴자 7명 모두 이 종교 분파가 정보를 통제하고 기술적으로 세뇌시킴으로써 신도들을 가족과 친구들로부터 소외시킨다고 말했다.

“두려움과 죄책감, 사이비종교가 그걸로 먹고 살죠.” 콜론씨는 피플지에 이렇게 말했다. “그들은 세상이 어느 순간이든 곧 끝날 것이라는 두려움을 주어서 그 종말 전에 선을 충분히 행하지 않은 것에 대해 죄책감을 느끼게 합니다.”

하나님의교회는 미리 준비한 답변서를 통해 하나님의 교회를 사이비종교로 치부하는 것은 “종교적인 편협함”이라면서 “교회가 지역사회에 어떻게 봉사하는지, 기독교의 기준 즉, 성경을 어떻게 지지하는지” 등으로 평가할 것을 촉구했다.

하나님의교회는 크리스마스와 부활절을 지키지 않는다. 이들은 전 세계 175개국에 신도가 존재하며 신도가 미국에만 15만 명 이상 있다고 주장한다

교회가 보내온 글을 보면, 콜론씨의 고소장에 담겨있는 사이비종교 묘사는 “만일 우리가 인정하지 않는 집단에 속해있다면 사이비종교거나 그보다 더 나쁜 것이다”라는 식으로 주류가 아닌 신앙에 대해 갖는 반응이라고 했다. “어떤 조직이 규범이나 기대에 상반된 특정 견해나 논리를 갖고 있고 거기에 우리가 동의하지 않거나 이해하기 어려울 때 흔히 사이비종교 ‘cult’라는 딱지를 붙인다.”

그러나 피플지와 이야기를 나눈 콜론씨와 또 다른 탈퇴자들의 주장에 따르면, 하나님의교회 지도자들은 2012년에 종말이 온다고 예언했다고 하며, 이는 전형적인 사이비종교다.

콜론씨는 “그들은 내가 모든 시간을 거기에다 쏟아 붓기를 바랐습니다”라고 말했다. 그리고 신자들과의 공동생활을 장려했으며 다른 교회에 가는 것조차 금했다고 덧붙였다. “어떤 때엔 밤 1~2시까지도 있었습니다. 너무 힘들어서 늘 잠이 부족했습니다. 어느 순간 내 취미와 내게 중요했던 사람들이 하나도 중요하지 않았습니다.”

콜론씨는 교회지도자들이 몇 시간씩 봉사나 성경공부를 하라고 요구하며 자신의 삶 구석구석까지 관리하려고 했다고 주장했다. 그리고 교회는 그녀가 듣는 음악도 통제했고 인터넷 사용도 금지했다고 주장했다. “거기에 가 있지 않으면 통제할 수가 없죠. 모두들 잠이 부족했고, 이 집단은 끊임없이 뭐든 반복하고 또 반복해서 머릿속에 박히게 했습니다. 그리고 기회를 엿보고 있다가 삶이 바뀌거나 공허감을 채워야 하는 사람들을 찾아내어 그들을 장악합니다.”

‘그들은 대놓고 정체를 밝히지 않는다. 그렇게 하면 아무도 자기들 교회에 오지 않기 때문이다.’

하나님의교회는 ‘어머니 하나님’이 이끈다. 자비로워 보이는 70대 중반의 이 여성원로는 장길자, 하늘에 계신 어머니, 하나님 어머니, 새로운 예수살렘의 어머니, 예루살렘 어머니 등으로 알려져 있다.

콜론씨의 말에 의하면, 신도가 이미 그곳 신앙에 헌신한 뒤에나 어머니 하나님의 존재에 대해서 알게 됩니다. “그들은 대놓고 정체를 밝히지 않습니다. 그렇게 하면 아무도 자기들 교회에 오지 않기 때문이죠”라고 피플지에 말했다.

“만일 그들이 ‘우리가 하나님이라 믿는 이 여성분이 있는데, 당신이 가족과 돈과 취미생활을 다 포기하고 따라오게 만들 것이다’라고 말했고 그 말을 듣고도 이 집단에 들어오길 원한다면 그건 그냥 당신이 한 일입니다. 적어도 알고도 정한 것 아닌가요.” “하지만 내가 들을 준비가 되었다고 그들이 판단했을 때에야 숟가락으로 떠먹이듯 정보를 제공합니다. 질문을 하면 그들은 그저 ‘공부를 더 하라'고만 하면서, 공부를 계속 하면 모든 질문에 대한 대답을 받게 된다고 말합니다. 당신 바로 앞에 미끼를 대롱대롱 매달아놓는 꼴입니다.”

하나님의교회가 준비한 대응에 따르면 자기들과 다른 교회들의 가장 큰 차이점은 “우리는 하나님 아버지 뿐 아니라 하나님 어머니도 믿는다… 성경의 예언에 따르면 하나님 어머니는 구원의 마지막 시기에 나타나신다”는 것이다.

장길자는 국제위러브유재단의 총재이기도 하다(이 비영리 단체는 성남에 근거지가 있다. 성남에는 하나님의교회 본부가 있는 곳이기도 하다).

1964년 ‘안상홍증인회’라 세워진 하나님의교회 세계복음선교협회는 어머니 하나님의 작고한 남편이라 알려진 안상홍이라는 이름을 가진 자의 작품이다. 탈퇴자들은 1985년에 죽은 안상홍이 재림한 그리스도이며 안상홍과 장길자는 함께 엘로힘 하나님이라고 들었다고 한다.

하나님의교회 홈페이지에는 안상홍은 “새 계약의 복음”을 회복하기 위한 “그의 임무를 완성”하여 “승천했”으며, 그 뒤로 “성경에 예언되어 있는 그대로, 하나님의 말씀을 시온에서 이 세상으로 전하기 위하여 우리의 새 예루살렘 어머니가 하나님의교회의 복음사역을 이끌어왔다”고 적혀있다.

교회지도자들이 신도들에게 임신중절을 지시한 혐의

콜론과 또다른 탈퇴자들은 교회 지도자들이 여성들에게 아이를 곧 소멸할 이 세상으로 데려오는 것은 “의미도 없고 이기적인 일”라며 신도들에게 임신중절을 지시하곤 했다고 주장했다.

탈퇴자들 전원은 봉급의 10~15%에 해당하는 십일조를 강요받았다고 주장했고, 심지어 신도들이 가진 것을 기부하게 하여 교회가 나중에 기금마련 행사에서 판매했다고 했다. 그리고 부유해 보이 젊은 백인을 목표로 삼아 새 신자를 모았으며, 교회는 새 신자 모집을 위해 1주일에 몇 번씩 쇼핑몰이나 대학 캠퍼스에 보냈다고 주장했다. 탈퇴자들은 또한 하나님의교회가 새 신자 모집할 때 최근 귀향한 참전군인의 심리적인 약점 이용을 강조했다고 했다.

어떤 탈퇴자들에 의하면, 새 신자 모집에 더 많은 시간을 쓰게 하기 위해 하나님의교회는 신도들이 대학을 중도하차하거나, 직장을 그만두거나, 가족을 무시하도록 종용했다. 그리고 심지어 어린이와 아기를 포함한 모든 신도들이 며칠동안 단식하도록 했다고 말한다.

피플지와 대화를 나눈 탈퇴자들은 또한 하나님의교회가 미국인 신자와 한국인 신자가 결혼하게 하기 위해서 열성신자와 하나님의교회를 믿지 않는 배우자의 이혼을 의도적으로 조장했다고 주장했다. 콜론씨의 경우에도 그랬다. 그의 전 남편은 아직도 하나님의교회 신도다.

하나님의교회는 피플지에 보낸 진술서에서, 신도들에게 중절수술을 조장한 일이 결코 없으며 특정 인종이나 상처 입은 귀향참전군인 중심으로 새 신자를 모집하려는 의도 모두 부정했다. 신도들의 삶이나 취침습관을 통제한 적도 없다고 밝혔다. 그리고 하나님의교회는 세상의 종말에 대한 연대표를 제시한 적도 없다고 주장했다.

사이비종교 연구자: 하나님의교회는 “신도들을 경제적으로 착취함으로써 번성한다.”

파멸을 가져오는 사이비종교집단에 대한 연구로 전 세계에서 인용되는 릭 로스(Rick Ross)는 하나님의교회 지도자들이 임심한 여성들에게 중절을 재촉했다고 주장하는 탈퇴자들을 여럿 만났는데, 그 주장의 신빙성에는 자신이 없다고 했다.

“만일 사실이라면, 그 이유는 온전히 헌신하게 하려는 겁니다.” 로스씨의 설명이다. “그들은 어떠한 방해요소도 원하지 않습니다. 그래서 누구와 결혼할지, 누구와 데이트할지, 자녀들을 가질지, 그 무엇이든지 이 집단이 허락해야 합니다. 그들은 이 집단이 최대한 생산적이기를 원합니다. 그렇기 때문에 궁극적으로 어린이는 반생산적입니다”라고 설명했다

로스씨는 하나님의교회가 외부사람들에게 신체적 손상을 가할 위험을 가진 건 아니지만 분명히 사이비종교 기준에 합당하다고 본다. “집단자살이나 무기비축을 준비하는 것은 아니나 다른 어떤 교회의 정당함도 받아들이지 않습니다. 자기네 집단만이 유일하게 정당한 교회이기 때문이죠”라고 로스씨가 말했다. “제아무리 교황이라 할 지라도 저주받은 운명이며 조금이라도 구원에 관심이 있다면 하나님어머니가 필요하다, 다른 대안은 없다고 가르칩니다.”

로스는 하나님의교회가 경제적 착취에 기반 해 번성하고 있다고 말했다. 물론 착취의 대상은 신도들이다. 또한 교회가 공동생활을 기획하는 이유 중 일부는 지도자들이 신도들의 무료노동을 쓸 수 있어서라고 말했다.

For two years, Michele Col?n believed with complete conviction that the end of the world was imminent and that an elderly lady from South Korea was God. For those same two years, Colon, a nurse, attended services at the World Mission Society Church of God in the New Jersey suburb of Ridgewood.



Col?n tells PEOPLE she defected from the World Mission Society Church of God more than four years ago. She says she did so because she believes she had been brainwashed into what she alleges is a doomsday cult.



Col?n further claims in a civil suit she filed against the 50-year-old World Mission Society Church of God, a copy of which was obtained by PEOPLE, that the group is a "profit-making" cult that "uses a number of psychological control tactics...to prevent its members from exposing its criminal and tortious behavior."



In its motion to dismiss Col?n's complaint, the church called her allegations "entirely fabricated." The motion states that Colon's claim is part of a larger effort by her to "position herself as a veteran of the 'cult war' and build a career as 'cult expert' to the detriment" of the World Mission Society Church of God's reputation.



But interviews conducted with six other former World Mission Society Church of God members, including a former member of 12 years, echo Col?n's claims. All seven former members tell PEOPLE the religious faction isolates its acolytes from their families and friends by controlling information and using brainwashing techniques.



"Fear and guilt ? that is what fuels this cult," Col?n tells PEOPLE. "They fill you with this fear that the world is going to end at any moment and you feel guilty for not doing enough good before the end comes."



In a prepared statement, the World Mission Society Church of God dismissed all cult characterizations as "religious intolerance" and urged any examination of it include "how the Church serves the community and how it adheres to the standard of Christianity, which is the Bible."





Colon: Communal Living Encouraged, Members Deprived of Sleep

The World Mission Society Church of God, which does not recognize Christmas or Easter, claims membership in more than 175 countries, with over 150,000 worshippers in the U.S. alone.



The church's prepared statement says the characterization of it as a cult in Col?n's suit stems from reaction to its non-mainstream beliefs: "If someone belongs to a group we disapprove, we call it a 'cult' or worse," the statement reads.



"When we disagree and have difficulty understanding the reasoning an organization maintains certain views that are contrary to the norm or to what we expect, we label them as a 'cult.'"



But Col?n and the other apostates that PEOPLE spoke with insist the World Mission Society Church of God, whose leaders allegedly predicted that the world would end in 2012, bears all the hallmarks of a cult.



"Before I left, they expected me to spend all of my free time there," Col?n says. She adds that communal living was encouraged among members and that followers were prohibited from stepping foot inside another church.



"We would be there until 1 or 2 a.m. some nights. It became totally consuming and I was always sleep deprived. Suddenly, the hobbies and people that were important to me before were no longer important."



Col?n alleges church leaders tried "micromanaging" her life, demanding she spend hours in services or studying the Bible. The church, she claims, controlled the music she listened to and forbade her from using the Internet.



"They can't control you if you're not there," Col?n explains. "Everyone is sleep deprived, and this group is constantly repeating things, and regurgitating things, and it becomes engrained in your head. They're opportunistic. They look to recruit people who're going through a transition period in their lives or have some void to fill ? and they will fill it."





'They Don't Tell You What They ARE All About Upfront, Because If They Did, No One Would Join Them'

The World Mission Society Church of God is led by "Mother God," a gentle-looking doyenne in her mid-70s who's also known as Jang Gil-ja, Zhang Gil-jah, Chang Gil-jah, Heavenly Mother, God the Mother, New Jerusalem Mother, and Mother Jerusalem.



Col?n says it isn't until you're already committed to the faith that you're told of Mother God's existence.



"They don't tell you what they are all about upfront, because if they did, no one would join them," Col?n tells PEOPLE. "It'd be fine if they said, 'There's this lady we believe is God and we'll convince you to give up your family and your money and your hobbies.' If you still want to join after that, good for you. At least you're making an informed decision."



Instead, she says, "you're spoon fed information when they feel you're ready to hear it. If you ask questions, they just tell you to 'Study more' and that all of your questions will be answered if you keep studying. They dangle a carrot in front of you."



The church's prepared response claims "the biggest difference between our Church and other churches" is that "we believe in God the Mother as well as God the Father. ... According to the prophecies of the Bible, God the Mother is to appear in the last age of redemption."



Gil-ja also serves as chairwoman for the We Love U Foundation and the New Life Welfare Foundation, both non-profits based in Seongnam, South Korea, the country's second largest city. Seongnam is also home to the World Mission Society Church of God's headquarters.



Founded in 1964 as the Witnesses of Jesus Church of God, the World Mission Society Church of God was the brainchild of a man named Ahnsahnghong, who is believed to be Mother God's late husband. Former members say they were told Ahnsahnghong ? who died in 1985 ? was the second coming of Christ, and together, Ahnsahnghong and Jang Gil-ja are jointly known as "Elohim God."



Upon "accomplishing his mission" to restore "the gospel of the new covenant," Ahnsahnghong "ascended to heaven," according to the church's website. Ever since, "our New Jerusalem Mother has been leading the gospel work of the Church of God to deliver the word of God from Zion to the world, just as was prophesied in the Bible."





Allegations Leaders Directed Members to Get Abortions

Col?n and the other former members allege that church leaders would direct congregants to get abortions, telling women it was "pointless and selfish" to bring a child into a world so close to the brink of annihilation.



The former members all claim that tithes of 10 to 15 percent of their salaries were mandatory, and that the church even encouraged members to donate possessions that were later sold at church fundraising events.



They also allege that recruitment efforts targeted young Caucasians who appeared wealthy, and that members were dispatched multiple times a week to malls and colleges for recruiting drives. According to the former members, the church also emphasized recruiting recently-returned army veterans who might be more psychologically vulnerable.



Some of the ex members say they were encouraged to drop out of college, quit their jobs, and ignore their families so they'd have more time to recruit. They claim church congregants ? even children and infants ? were also expected to fast for days.



The former congregants that PEOPLE spoke with allege the World Mission Society Church of God also worked to deliberately dissolve marriages between devoted members and their unconvinced partners in order to arrange weddings between American and South Korean church members. It even happened to Col?n, she says; her ex-husband remains a member of the church.



The church's statement to PEOPLE denied members have ever been encouraged to seek abortions or that recruitment efforts were geared towards specific races or vulnerable veterans. It also denied exerting control over members' lives or their sleeping habits. Additionally, the church claims it has never offered a timeline for the world's demise.





Cult Scholar: Church 'Thrives on Financial the Exploitation of Its Members'

Rick Ross, who has been cited internationally for his work on destructive cults, says he has met several former members of the World Mission Society Church of God who claim church leaders urged pregnant women to abort their babies, but isn't sure he can believe such claims.



"If that is, in fact, true, the reason is they want total devotion," Ross explains. "They want no distractions. That's why everything must be permitted by the group, including who you marry, who you date, if you have children. They want the group to be maximally productive and a child is ultimately counterproductive."



While not "physically dangerous" to outsiders, Ross is certain the church meets the cult criteria.



"They're not talking about mass suicide or stockpiling weapons, but this group doesn't accept the idea that any other church might be valid, because they're the only valid church," Ross said.



"It doesn't matter if you're the Pope ? you're doomed and you're in need of Mother God if you're even remotely interested in salvation ... there is no alternative."



Ross says the World Mission Society Church of God "thrives on the financial exploitation" of its members. He said that the church's communal living is designed, in part, to enable leaders to get free labor out of its followers.



"The people in this church will ignore their own bills in order to give more to the church, which expects this of them," said Ross.



He added, "This cult dominates a person's life so that they have no other life."
