오정현 목사, 박사학위 유지…포체스트롬대 심의 결과 통보

남아프리카공화국 포체스트롬 대학이 오정현 목사의 박사학위를 취소하지 않는다고 밝혔다.

표절 부분이 있지만 논문의 독창성과 학문 발전 기여도가 여전히 인정된다는 설명이다. 대신 오 목사는 표절 부분을 수정한 논문을 다시 제출하고, 인용 저자들에게 사과 편지를 보내야 한다.

사랑의교회는 31일 남아프리카공화국 포체스트롬 대학에서 받은 오 목사 논문 조사 결과를 공개했다.

사랑의교회가 공개한 포체스트롬 대학의 답변서에 따르면 포체스트롬 대학은 1998년 오 목사에게 수여한 박사학위를 취소하지 않기로 결정했다.

포체스트롬 대학은 신학부 교수진으로 구성된 특별위원회에서 오 목사의 논문을 검토한 결과 “논문에 표절 부분이 있지만 논문의 독창성(still constitutes an original) 및 제자도에 대한 학문적 유의미성과 기여도(significant contribution to the discipline)가 여전히 인정된다”고 평가했다. 표절 부분을 모두 삭제하더라도 논문의 독창성과 학문발전에 기여한 공헌은 유지된다는 것이다.

오 목사에게는 표절과 관련된 논문의 모든 부분을 수정한 사본을 제출하라고 요청했다. 또 출처를 밝히지 않고 인용한 참고문헌의 저자들 중 생존해 있는 저자들에게 사과 편지를 보낼 것을 요구했다.

한편 오 목사는 논문 표절 여부와 관련, 지난 3월 17일 자진해서 6개월 동안 설교를 중단하고 사례비의 30%를 받지 않고 있다.

Subject: Plagiarism by Dr John Jung-Hyun Oh

Esteemed Ladies and Gentlemen,

This message serves to inform you about the decision taken on 29 May 2013 by the Senate of the North-West University about alleged plagiarism by Dr John Jung-Hyun Oh in his thesis submitted to the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education in 1998.

Over the past year the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University has received various complaints and enquiries from a number of parties about the matter. These were regarded extremely seriously. The matter was investigated extensively by a specialist committee of the Faculty of Theology, after which their report was considered by both the Extended Management Committee, and on the recommendation of the Extended Management Committee, by the Senate Committee of the said campus. Because of the seriousness of the matter and the implications for the university as a whole, it was deemed necessary that the university Senate pronounce on the matter, which prompted the discussion and decision yesterday at a Senate meeting in Mafikeng.

While it is clear to the Senate that plagiarism indeed occurs in the thesis, Senate decided not to withdraw the thesis and the 1998 award of the PhD degree to Dr Oh, because the thesis still constitutes an original and significant contribution to the discipline, even if all the sections where plagiarism was identified, are removed. Dr Oh are required to correct each and every occurrence of plagiarism in the thesis. These corrections have been stipulated by Senate and provided to Dr Oh. This must be done to the satisfaction of the Faculty and Dr Oh must submit corrected copies of the thesis to the Faculty. He will furthermore be required to address letters of apology to the surviving authors whose works have been plagiarised.
